There aren’t many choices for accommodation in Waitomo. We ended up at the Waitomo Caves Guest Lodge, which is a family run B&B right in town. The inn is located up a bit of a hill from the main road, with the parking lot at roadside level. There is a steep driveway up to the house where you can park for a while while you unload, however. The owners at the B&B (and their dog) were very warm and welcoming, and told us everything we needed to know about our visit. The family sutdio room we stayed in was very comfortable, with some home baked cookies waiting for us as we unloaded. It is attached to the main house, but was still very quiet. The bathroom was spotless – everything looked brand new. We’ve stayed in a lot of hotel rooms in the past 52 countries, and this was by far one of the cleanest bathrooms we have ever seen!
The bed was a little soft, but we still got a good night’s rest. In the morning, the breakfast was in the main room, with bread, jam, cereal, and coffee. It was a good chance to meet other traveler’s and get good tips on what to see.
The room cost 120 NZD.
