Curiously enough, there are no hotels in Nizwa itself. We ended up staying at Majan Guest House, a couple of miles outside the downtown area. It was very clean, the room was large. The owner held our bags for us during the day, and was very surprised we didn’t have a car. There were no restaurants nearby, but it was easy to get in to town by bus.
Dear Ian and Wendy!
great adventures to read.We got in Oman and will have a week or so to spend here.Could you recall the Majan Guest House’s room prices, maybe? How about the Day trip you paid to get you that lovely Wadi Shab, etc.? As we are google-ing the Internet the omani Tour operators seem charging high for our budget.Nevertheless we will do as you advised on catching Mini Buses, etc.to get around.
Thank you for your kind reply.gabor

Hello! I’m sorry, we don’t remember what we paid and as it was a few years ago, doubtless the prices will have changed anyhow. The tours we took were definitely not cheap but they seemed to be the only way to see some of the things we saw unless you were to rent a car on your own. We’re not too sure that that would be cheaper, anyhow. The mini-buses are much cheaper, for sure, but don’t run out to places like Wadi Shab or Jebel Shams. We thought it was worth the splurge! Good luck and enjoy – Oman is a wonderful country!

I stayed at Majan Guest House late 2010. I lived in Muscat for 2years and travelled around a fair bit. Most small guest houses in the Sultanate are roughly around 15-40Rial a night. The Majan is one of the cleanest i have stayed in. In alot of small hotels and guest houses ive had to ask for clean bed sheets to be put on. Nizwa is a beautil town, and Izki close by is also worth a visit! Oman is an amazing place and the people are wonderful.
Oman is my second home and i will defiantly be back soon.

We stayed there for 4 nights, it was our base for exploring the mountains..
Very clean, the price was about 26 Rial per night, including an excellent breakfast and WLAN, very friendly.
You can eat in the restaurant next door (place where you get breakfast) Good food, but no atmosphere,
Better go in town, park in front of the souk. There is one restaurant when you cross the road on the right, alongside the river bed after 50 m. (Arabic atmosphere). Another one facing the souk on the side of the road you come from. Both offer good food. (you can sit outside and watch)
