Sepilok Rehabilitation Center, Sandakan, Malaysia

We flew to Sandakan on the island of Borneo to see the Sepilok Orangutan Reserve / Sepilok Rehabilitation Center. It was one of the highlights of our trip.

On the way from Kota Kinabalu to Sandakan, we flew over Mount Kinabalu.
We stayed at the Sepilok Jungle Resort, about a 10 minute walk to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabiliation Center.
The Sepilok Orangutan Rehabiliation Center re-introduces previously captured and injured orangutans to the wild. There are two daily feedings which help newly freed orangutans make the transition to living in the wild. This gives visitors a spectacular opportunity to see the orangutans up close and personal in the wild. The first feeding we went to in the morning was rained out. Turns out the orangs like the rain about as much as we do...


In the background you can see the feeding platform. As you can see, they let us get really close.

There was also several macaques hanging around to eat whatever the orangutans left over.






On our way out we got this picture of the Sepilok Jungle Resort. The landscaping is beautiful, and the grounds are immacuately kept up.
