In December 1998, we traveled north towards the California/Oregon border and stayed in Crescent City where we visited several of the redwood parks. According to their brochure, Redwood National and State Parks represent a cooperative management effort of the National Parks Service and the California Department of Parks and Recreation. Together these parks are a World Heritage Site and International Biosphere Reserve. These parks are about a 5 hour drive from Santa Rosa, and are home to the world's tallest living tree. Today, Redwood National and State Parks include just under 40,000 acres of ancient forests, nearly half of all that remains in the world today.
